Why Closed-Won breaks in the first 48 hours

After signature, buyers expect the company to remember why they bought. Customer Success often inherits a CRM stage change and a thin note. The promise ledger exists so verbal commitments don’t vanish between the account executive and the CSM.

This is the onboarding churn window in B2B SaaS — sometimes called early churn or inception churn. Customers go dark or cancel before they reach value. Time to value after Closed-Won stretches because kickoff becomes archaeology: Slack threads, call recordings, and “I think we said we’d include X.”

Industry surveys keep showing the same pattern. GUIDEcx’s 2026 survey of 200 B2B onboarding professionals found 62% had lost at least one customer to a poor onboarding experience. Sixteen percent named a poor sales-to-onboarding handoff as their single biggest onboarding challenge. A field study of 74,871 B2B contracts found only 82% were retained through the end of onboarding — roughly one in five sold contracts never became productive.

Lost customers from a poor onboarding experience are expensive because the acquisition cost is already spent. A broken sales-to-onboarding handoff is one of the cheapest failure modes to fix: write the deal down before the invite. Our guide from closed-won to day 30 walks through the first month, step by step. That’s the Closed-Won packet.
